　この度、18, Murataでは、マルゲリータ・ラゾの日本初個展「Yet to Be Read or Seen」を開催いたします。ラゾは、沼ノ端レジデンシーに参加し、日本に一ヶ月滞在しながらリサーチと滞在制作を行っており、今回は、昨年ミラノのFanta-MLNで開催した個展に引き続き音響作品を発表いたします。
　口笛を用いた音響作品は、劇場の舞台裏の技術者たちが舞台上での指示との混同を避けるために考案した、歴史的なコミュニケーションシステムに着想を得て制作されました。楽器と声の中間に位置する口笛が、ギャラリー内に設置されたスピーカーを通じて空間を形成します。音響作品と連動し、口笛が言語化され、日本語に翻訳されたポスターは、ギャラリーの外へと続いて公共空間に設置されます。
　5月13日(火)には、沼ノ端レジデンシーにて同時期に滞在制作を行った森岡美樹と共同でオープンスタジオを開催し、滞在中に制作した陶芸、写真作品の発表を行う予定です。合わせてご高覧ください。

18, Murata is pleased to present Yet to Be Read or Seen, the first solo exhibition in Japan by Margherita Raso. Currently participating in the Numanohashi Residency, Raso has been undertaking a one-month research and production residency in Japan. This exhibition follows her recent solo show at Fanta-MLN in Milan and centers once again on her sound-based works.
The featured sound installation employs whistling, inspired by a historical communication system developed by backstage theatre technicians to avoid confusion with onstage cues. Positioned between instrument and voice, the whistle shapes the spatial experience through speakers installed throughout the gallery. In conjunction with the sound work, a series of posters translating these whistles into written language—and further into Japanese—will extend the exhibition into public spaces beyond the gallery.
On Tuesday, May 13, Raso will also hold an Open Studio event at the Numanohashi Residency, jointly with Miki Morioka, who has been participating in the residency during the same period. Together, they will present new works created during their stay, including ceramics and photographic pieces. We warmly invite you to experience both presentations.

休暇の途中で携帯電話を失くしてしまった。どうやってこの体験のすべてを、あたまの中のカメラだけで残せばいいのだろう？この地球の別の場所に吹く風の激しさを味わうことも、見知らぬものとのやり取りを握りしめることもできない。それは、映画のようなmono no aware（物の哀れ）だった──束の間で輝いて消えていく。私は、無常が永続することを知っていて、受け入れる。

身体のない、でも存在に満ちる部屋。呼吸・音色・沈黙の振る舞いに私たちを浸らせる空間のコンポジション。知識・教え・感情は、言葉でなく旋律・反響・空気を通したら、どう動くだろうか？

劇場で口笛を吹いてはいけないという。かつて舞台裏の作業員に指示を出す技術者だけに許された、暗号として使われていたものだからだ。口笛は、言葉では伝えきれないものについての静かな思索となる。ここでは、その口笛こそがこの演出の主役である（《Eight Types of Whistle》2023）。音が響くごとに、振動の壁が立ち上がっては崩れていく。それぞれの音が、いずれ訪れる何もなくなった場を指し示していることに気づくとき、そこにはしめやかさがある。この夜が永遠に続くことはない。ショー・マスト・ゴー・オン──だが、私たちの知っている形では、それもやがて終わる。

Yoru ni kuchibue wo fuku to hebi ga deru ── 東洋では、迷信として、夜に口笛を吹くと霊や盗人、あるいは厄災を招くと信じられている。身体から発される音は、いつの時代も、見えないものや語られないものと絡み合ってきた。口笛は境界的であり、親密でありながら抑えがたく、なじみ深いものでありながらどうにもできない不運や悪意の力を呼び起こす力を秘める。口笛──舞台上での演者同士の混乱や、迷える霊への偶発的な呼びかけ──が呼吸に始まり消えていくのと同様に、人生や記憶もまた始まっては消えていく。それでも、反復と蓄積を通して、私たちは集めつづける。こうして生まれる質感の蓄積は、直線的でも教訓的でもない。むしろ知識とは、物体や辞書に見たり読んだりできるものに限らず、囁きや合図あるいは呼びかけが残す微かな兆しの中にも宿ることを示しており、消えてもなお反響し続ける。それは、自らを超えた何かを指し示す、響きの徴しである。

音色、間、あるいはリズムに意味を与えるそのあいだの空間とは一体何なのだろうか。一時的な休止や開けた空間は、空（から）ではなく、力を帯びている。それは、私たちを留まることから解放させる。けれど、こうした分節は、どのように綴ればよいのだろう？口をすぼめて空気を乱す音（pucker）や、口の中の天井と舌の間を空気が抜けるときの音（palatal）は、どう文字にすればいいのだろう？あるいは、耳に指を入れて開口部の形を変えるときの音（wolf）は？これは存在を知らせる口笛なのか、口笛の語りなのか、魅了するための口笛なのか？都市の風景に散りばめられたそれらの断片（《Rehearsal #1-8》2023）は、譜面のバラバラになった要素、あるいは部分的に思い出される歌となり、翻訳と解釈を求める。それらは引き裂かれ、除かれたのち、やがてつかの間の静けさに沈んでゆく。

私たちは思い出す。関係性とは、確かさや主導権だけでなく、注意深さや開かれた脆さのことでもあるのだと。身体、素材、時間の間を流れる、そのつかの間の変調の瞬間。まだ読まれても見られてもいないものに耳を傾けることで、どんなに小さな合図であっても、私たちはそれが持つ重みを認めることができる。

あらゆるギガバイトをもってしても、このうつろいを留めることはできない。

I lost my phone halfway through a vacation. How would I capture this universe of experience with only the camera in my mind? I couldn’t savor the ferociousness of the wind in this other hemisphere or clench the interaction between myself and a stranger in the tight palms of my hands. It was cinematic mono no aware (物の哀れ): brief, luminous, and gone. I am aware impermanence is enduring and I accept it.

A room emptied of bodies, yet filled with presence. A spatial composition that bathes us in a choreography of breath, tone, and silence. How does knowledge, instruction, and emotion move not only through words but through cadence, resonance, and air?

No whistling in the theatre, they say. It is reserved only for technicians who once used it as code to gesture directions to stagehands. It is a meditation on communication beyond language. Here, the whistle is the protagonist in this dramaturgy (Eight Types of Whistle, 2023). Vibrational walls rise and fall with each passing tenor. There is gentle melancholy in the realization that each note points towards a site of inevitable absence. This night won’t last forever. The show must go on, but it will come to an end, at least in the form that we know it.

Yoru ni kuchibue wo fuku to hebi ga deru (夜に口笛を吹くと蛇が出る) — if you whistle at night, a snake will appear. In the east, superstition also warns against whistling, as it is believed to invite spirits, thieves, or danger after dark. Sound produced from the body has long been entangled with the unseen and the unspoken. It is liminal: intimate yet uncontainable, familiar yet capable of bringing on forces of misfortune or malicious activities beyond our control. Confusion amongst performers on set or an accidental call to wandering ghosts—just as the whistle begins and vanishes with breath, so too does life and memory. And yet, through repetition and layering, we collect. This accumulation of texture is not linear or didactic; rather, it illustrates that knowledge can be carried not only in what can be read or seen in lexicon or objects, but in ephemeral marks of whispers, cues, and calls that reverberate long after they fade. A sonic trace that signifies something larger than itself.

What is this space between timbre, the ma(間), or the intervals that give rhythm its meaning? Pauses or clearings are not empty but charged. They allow us to resist fixation. But how do you spell these articulations? What is the textual rendering of the sound of pursed lips to create turbulence (pucker) or pushing air between the roof of your mouth and tongue (palatal)? How about when you insert fingers into your aural cavity to shape the opening (wolf)? Is this a whistle to be found or a whistle to speak or a whistle to enchant? Dispersed in the cityscape (Rehearsal #1–8, 2023), these fragments become the scattered elements of a score, or a partially remembered song, demanding translation and interpretation. Torn and removed, they eventually yield to fugitive calm.

We are reminded that connection is not solely about clarity or dominance but about attention and vulnerability. The fleeting moments of modulation that pass between bodies, materials, and time. By listening to what is yet to be read or seen, we acknowledge the weight of even the smallest signal.

All the gigabytes could not hold this transience.
